29 April 2026 will forever be a watershed moment in the creative industry in Uganda, following President Museveni’s official signing of the Copyright and Neighboring Rights (Amendment) Act, 2026, into law.
On 17th March, 2026, the Bill was passed by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, with the presidential assent, it will normally be enforced to help creatives earn from their crafts.
Tighter systems and methods will be introduced to help collect royalties and protect the economic rights of musicians and other creatives who have long expressed concerns about not earning from their craft.
The Copyright Amendment Act 2026 will also require authorities to monitor digital platforms and immediately take action against individuals who pirate content.
To celebrate the long-awaited breakthrough, the UNMF President, Eddy Kenzo, who championed the campaign, shared on his social media handles, appreciating H.E. Museveni for listening, engaging, and assenting to the law.
