Illegal Power Connection Sparks Fire Outbreak at Primary School In Namisindwa

Date:

Due to an illegal connection of power, fire outbreak occurred on April 25, 2025, at around 9:00 PM at Mercy and Love Primary School in Lwakhakha Town Council, Namisindwa District.

The fire started in the girls’ dormitory, which was closed for the term and did not have any students after the wire they had tapped from a nearby electricity pole sparked fire.

According to SP Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson, the fire was reported to the nearest Lwakhakha Police Station by the school’s security guard, Charles Wairwa.

He says the Mbale Fire Brigade, local police, and the community worked together to extinguish the fire. Unfortunately, all properties in the dormitory, including mattresses, beds, and suitcases, worthy millions of shillings completely burned. There were no casualties reported.

Police preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have been caused by a suspected illegal connection where the wire was tapped by the school from a neighboring power pole.
