Eight people have been remanded to Nyabuhikye Prison following the gruesome mob killing of a police officer during a burial ceremony in Ibanda District on 6th.Apirl,2025.
Appearing before Grade One Magistrate Edith Tusabe on Tuesday, the suspects were charged in connection with the death of 28-year-old Police Constable Suleiman Chemonges, who was attached to Bisheshe Police Post.
Constable Chemonges had been deployed to provide security at the April 6th, burial of Lazarus Kahangire, a 47-year-old inmate from Nyabuhikye Prison who died while on remand.
The incident occurred in Bisheshe Division, where the officer was reportedly attacked and lynched by a mob during the ceremony.
Those remanded include Gaston Muhwezi, 27; Mwesigye Sam Kikurungi, 53; Alfred Arinaitwe alias Mabere, 43; Christine Atuhaire, 37; Allen Nuwatuha, 23; Alex Ahimbisibwe, 18; Christine Komugisha, 19; and Bayron Katungye, 29. Police say several other suspects are still at large.
The group faces murder charges under case reference AA-14/2025, contrary to Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act.
During the court session, some of the accused raised concerns over lack of medical attention in custody. However, Magistrate Tusabe advised that such complaints should be addressed by the relevant authorities.
The case was adjourned to April 29, 2025, when the suspects are expected to return to court.
