AI and mobile dominance to reshape African marketing landscape, report says

The African Marketing Confederation identifies the core levers redesigning how brands are discovered and trusted across the continent through 2026.JOHANNESBURG — Marketing in Africa has moved beyond incremental changes and is being redesigned around how brands are discovered and trusted, according to the African Marketing Confederation.

In a report released Jan. 28, AMC President Helen McIntee-Carlisle said marketing effectiveness in 2026 is driven by interconnected levers shaped by mobile dominance, data access and local community dynamics.

McIntee-Carlisle said artificial intelligence now sits at the center of modern marketing, but noted a gap between enthusiasm and actual capability. Success currently depends on moving away from isolated tools toward system-level intelligence where insight and measurement operate as one. She cautioned that selective use and human judgment remain decisive for brands.

The report also highlighted a structural shift in digital visibility. Traditional search engine optimization is being replaced by generative engine optimization, where AI-driven systems decide which brands are featured in generated answers.

For African marketers, mobile remains the primary environment for engagement. Because the continent bypassed legacy desktop infrastructure, marketing performance depends on speed, data efficiency and reliability within mobile constraints.

Data collection practices are also shifting as third-party tracking disappears from major web browsers. The report said performance is increasingly determined by first-party, consent-driven data models. Brands that treat data as a trust-based relationship rather than a commodity are expected to retain better control in a cookieless environment.

The AMC also noted that influence is migrating from mass celebrity endorsements to micro-influencers and niche creators. Much of this engagement is moving into private messaging platforms and closed groups where cultural relevance carries more weight than broad reach.

Founded in 2011, the AMC is a pan-African body of marketing professionals that coordinates national marketing associations to promote industry standards across the continent.
