Vatican Begins Final Rites for Pope Francis with Coffin Closure Ahead of Divine Mercy Mass

Date:

Today, the Rite of the Closing of the Coffin of His Holiness Pope Francis was solemnly presided over by His Eminence Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church. This deeply symbolic moment marks the beginning of the final commendation of the late Pontiff, as the Church enters the official days of mourning known as the Novendiali.

As the world continues to reflect on Pope Francis’ life and legacy, the Vatican prepares for the Eucharistic Celebration on the Second Day of the Novendiali, scheduled for Sunday, April 27, 2025, coinciding with Divine Mercy Sunday.

The Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the parvis of Saint Peter’s Basilica, with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, former Secretary of State, presiding over the liturgy in memory of the beloved Roman Pontiff.

A Gathering of the Faithful

In tribute to the wide-reaching ministry of Pope Francis, each day of the Novendiali involves participation from different communities tied to his mission. On this second day, the employees and faithful of Vatican City are specially invited, alongside teenagers visiting Rome for the Jubilee dedicated to youth.

Notably, no entrance tickets are required for this celebration.

Guidelines for Concelebrants

Clergy who wish to concelebrate are expected to follow the schedule below:

  • Patriarchs and Cardinals – arrive by 9:45 a.m. at the Chapel of Saint Sebastian with white damask mitres
  • Archbishops and Bishops – arrive by 9:30 a.m. at the Braccio di Costantino with appropriate vestments (amice, surplice, cincture, and simple white mitre)
  • Presbyters and Deacons – arrive by 9:00 a.m. in the reserved sector of Saint Peter’s Square, with white stoles and a valid celebret

This period of mourning not only honors Pope Francis’ profound influence on the global Church but also reaffirms the unity, compassion, and spiritual leadership he so fervently championed.
