KAMPALA, Uganda — The Uganda National Oil Company held a workshop Thursday to urge suppliers to adopt stricter safety and environmental standards as the country transitions toward oil production.
The event, held at Kabira Country Club, focused on quality, health, safety, security and environmental (QHSSE) requirements for service providers within the sector.
UNOC Chief Operating Officer Samantha Muhwezi told attendees that expectations for stakeholders are rising as the industry moves beyond the exploration and development phases. She said QHSSE standards are a critical foundation for responsible and sustainable operations.
QHSSE is not just a compliance requirement, Muhwezi said. It is a shared responsibility that demands commitment, vigilance, accountability and continuous improvement from all of us.
Muhwezi said adhering to these standards is essential to protect lives, local communities and the environment. She warned that failing to meet requirements could damage investor confidence, ecosystems and national development.
The workshop is part of a broader UNOC initiative to help Ugandan enterprises meet international benchmarks and compete for contracts within the petroleum value chain.
During the engagement, the company also released a National Content Documentary. The film highlights progress in local participation, skills development and the growth of Ugandan businesses in the oil and gas industry.
