President Museveni has appealed to religious leaders across the country to continue preaching the gospel of peace, harmony and reconciliation in the aftermath of the 2026 general elections.
In a message read on his behalf by his envoy for Buganda region, Mukasa Ssewava, the president said religious leaders had played a pivotal role in discouraging protest votes and promoting reconciliation among politicians aggrieved by the election results.
Ssewava said that despite the tension and anxiety that followed the polls, religious leaders had remained consistent in promoting peace and stability.
He urged them to intensify efforts to encourage the public to accept the leaders declared winners by the Electoral Commission (EC).
He made the remarks during a meeting that brought together religious leaders and resident city commissioners.
Msgr Lawrence Ssemusu said Uganda needs peace to sustain development.
“Without peace nothing can take place,” he said.
He said it was the responsibility of religious leaders to champion reconciliation among those dissatisfied with the election outcomes.
The RCC for Kampala, Lule Mawiya commended religious leaders and Ugandans for maintaining calm during the post-election period.
However, he warned that the capital must remain orderly, particularly in trade and transport operations. He said that with 19 days left before the expiry of a directive against illegal street vending, authorities would begin evicting vendors operating unlawfully on city streets.
“I am here to remind all street traders, boda boda riders and taxi operators that we are ready to enforce the KCCA directive against illegal operations in Kampala,” he said.
