JINJA: Medical School Principal on Spot for Denying Students Exams Over School Bus Dues

The Principal of Ophthalmic Clinical Officers Training School, Jinja has courted the wrath of the State Minister for education in charge of higher education Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo for allegedly denying students who had not paid for the School bus, exams.

 

Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo was in Jinja on Thursday, 19th June, 2025 on a monitoring tour in selected medical schools in Jinja city with the aim of ascertaining how government funds to these institutions have been utilized and how exams are progressing.

 

It can be recalled that on Monday 16th June, medical schools across the country started their examinations with 56000 sitting till the end of June 2025.

 

However, while at Ophthalmic Clinical Officers Training School, 30 students complained to Muyingo that they were denied to sit for exams despite clearing tuition. The affected students told the minister that their sin was failure to pay for the school bus.

 

The Minister later issued a stern warning to Principals of Medical schools across the country against denying students from sitting their exams after clearing tuition.

 

“I will not tolerate any indiscipline exhibited by any principle. Whoever does not follow the law will be arrested, why deny a student who has cleared tuition, assessment exams? “Asked the tough talking Minister.

 

The Minister who said they were providing oversight supervision and find out if the assessment on students is conducted following the guidelines with the guidance of inspectors and coordinators and whether the medical schools have the necessary materials and resources started from Jinja school of Nursing and Midwifery.

 

He was impressed and applauded the leadership of the school for abiding by the guidelines as issued by the ministry of Education and Sports. He also paid a courtesy visit to Medical Laboratory Training school Jinja.

 

“Its been very impressive, the students are seriously engaged in the assessment and I want to thank the government through the ministry of Education and Sports for ensuring smooth running of these institutions through funding and provision of supplies for students’ assessment.” Stated Muyingo.

 

The minister concluded by giving an ultimatum of two weeks to some proprietors and principals of medical schools who have not yet fulfilled the stipulated guidelines to have a conducive environment for all learners including the PWDs.

 

Relatedly, Hellen Mukakarisa Kataratambi the Executive Director of Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examination Board revealed that there are 26000 Allied Health Professionals and over 56000 students are sitting the assessment exams that started on Monday 16th June 2025.

 

She urged those students that have missed these exams to wait for December this year because their principals failed to register them on time.
