Former Education Minister Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire to be Laid to Rest on Wednesday

Last week, 14 January 2026, former Education and Sports Minister Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire breathed her last at 84 years, after struggling with health challenges.

The late Bitamazire served as minister of education from 1979 to 1980, before again assuming the position from 2005 to 2011.

Her death was followed by a ring of vigils as family, friends, and former workmates united to grieve and pray for her soul to rest in peace.

On Monday, 19 January 2026, a requiem mass was held at Our Lady of Fatima Kansanga Parish, followed by a vigil at her family home in Kansanga Kiwafu.

Another requiem mass was held today, 20 January 2026, at Lubaga Cathedral, followed by another vigil in the village of Butambala.

She will be laid to rest at her ancestral burial grounds on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, at Butambala – Kibugga, Masaka.
