Five Killed in Fort Portal-Kasese Road Crash Involving University Van and Bus

Date:

Five people, including two nursing students, lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving a Fins Medical University van and a Skies Bus Company coach along the Fort Portal–Kasese highway.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:50 p.m. on Saturday, according to Vincent Twesige, spokesperson for the Rwenzori West police. He reported that the two vehicles sideswiped while maneuvering through a narrow section of the road, causing the Toyota Hiace van (registration number UAQ 436Q) to lose control, overturn multiple times, and come to rest in the middle of the road.

The Isuzu bus (UBQ 993G), which had passengers on board, was slightly damaged. While the driver sustained minor injuries, all passengers were reported safe.

The van, belonging to Fins Medical University in Fort Portal City, was returning from a medical outreach activity held at Busita Playground in Bunyangabu District.

Patrick Ruhweza, the university secretary, identified the deceased as Gerald Muhumuza, a qualified nurse; James Kato, a support staff member; Meddy Tusime, the van driver; and nursing students Pauson Amanya and Trust Koshaba.

Three others—Matiya Businge, Everest Kugonza, and John Calvin Omasege—were seriously injured and are currently receiving treatment at Great Lakes International Hospital and Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital.
