Coffee farmers Advised to Grow Robusta Coffee for Sustainable Development

Date:

The Chancellor of Makerere University and who doubles as NRM Chairperson for Kasese District, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, has encouraged residents to switch from growing Arabica coffee to Robusta coffee to increase their earnings.

Dr. Kiyonga made this call while distributing Robusta coffee seedlings to NRM Chairpersons from Bukonzo County West.

According to Dr. Kiyonga, well-maintained Robusta coffee farms can yield better results, translating to higher prices. He emphasised that this initiative aims to improve household incomes for local farmers.

The NRM Chairpersons who received the coffee seedlings expressed gratitude to Dr. Kiyonga for his efforts in extending projects that benefit ordinary people.

Speaking to Salt TV, Mr. Jockus Kabatoro, a youth from Kithoma-Kanyatsi in Bukonzo County West, praised Dr. Kiyonga as a visionary leader who focuses on uplifting people through agricultural innovations.
Kabatoro urged his fellow youths to support leaders with long-term plans and to engage in coffee production for a brighter future.

Dr. Kiyonga’s initiative to promote Robusta coffee farming is part of his broader efforts to improve livelihoods in Kasese District.

Dr. Kiyonga has previously championed the growing of cassava as a staple food in the district, which he believes has contributed to fighting food insecurity. His efforts have earned him recognition as a leader dedicated to sustainable development and poverty reduction.
