Mawokota South MP, Yusuf Nsibambi, has told Bbeg Media he met President Museveni at State House, Entebbe, to try to find a peaceful way of resolving the conflicts between the different political players in the country.
Nsibambi’s revelation comes after a photograph of him and other opposition leaders, Latif Sebaggala, Muhammed Kateregga of JEEMA, and Moses Kabuusu of PFF with Museveni, made rounds on social media platforms like today, raising several questions.
“We met him yesterday (February 5) because that is the only alternative we have. Do you think this government is going away anytime soon? We need a national dialogue on the issues affecting our country,” he said.
He said this was not a “deal-making” meeting as some people had suggested on social media.
“I remain a member of the opposition, so meeting Museveni does not change that. Even Hamas meets with the Israeli government, so why can’t some of us meet Museveni?” he asked.
He said he had met the president at least four times before; there was nothing unique about yesterday’s meeting.
Nsibambi said the president expressed concern about some of the recent arrests of opposition activists, without revealing, specifically, what he told them about this matter.
Several supporters and leaders of the National Unity Platform were rounded up shortly before and after the election. Some have been arraigned in court, while the whereabouts of others are not known.
Nsibambi said leaders like Robert Kyagulanyi, the president of NUP, who had urged people to “guard and demand” their vote, had gone into hiding; a way had to be found to break the impasse.
Nsibambi, a member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), to NRM’s Susan Nakawuki in the recent parliamentary elections in Mawokota South.
