The outgoing Mawokota South MP, Yusuf Nsibambi, has joined the National Resistance Movement (NRM), weeks after losing his parliamentary seat in the recently concluded general election.
Nsibambi, a veteran academic and long-serving legislator, was officially received into the party by the Speaker Anita Among, and the NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong.
The former member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) lost the Mawokota South seat to NRM’s Susan Nakawuki, bringing to an end his tenure as area MP.
In his remarks Nsibambi, dressed in a yellow shirt, said he had made the decision “willingly” because he had realized that the opposition has no plan to take the country forward. He said the opposition was characterized by divisions and infighting.
He thanked Among for the guidance and encouragement that led him to defect to NRM.
Among welcomed Nsibambi for talking the bold decision and promised that he will be looked after.
Todwong said Nsibambi will attend the forthcoming retreat for NRM MPs to learn how things work in the party.
“Ours is an organised home, very foucssed with an able leader who is visionary,” Todwong said.
Nsibambi recently led a delegation of opposition members to a meeting with President Museveni, a move that led to mixed reactions.
Nsibambi’s shift adds to a growing list of opposition politicians who have in recent years crossed to the NRM. These include Beti Kamya, Beatrice Anywar and Aggrey Awori,
