MITYANA, Uganda — A running battle broke out between groups of youths and security forces along Mityana Road soon after the announcement of the presidential election results on Saturday afternoon.
Police and military personnel struggled to contain the youths, who barricaded the road and disrupted traffic. The unrest reportedly began with the removal of campaign portraits of National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidates and escalated as youths threw large stones and wooden roadside stalls onto the road.
Dozens of police and military personnel intervened to disperse the youths, whose activities stretched between Bulenga and Buloba townships — a distance of about seven kilometers (four miles).
Security was heightened at Bujuuko by 5 p.m., with police advising residents to be off the streets and in their homes by 8 p.m.
