Yasini Omari threatens legal action against EC over delayed decision

Date:

Yasini Omari, the NRM candidate for Makindye Division mayor, has threatened to take legal action against the Electoral Commission (EC) over what he describes as an unjustified delay in ruling on his complaint regarding the nomination of rival candidates.

Speaking to Bbeg Media at his office in Muyenga, Makindye Division, Omari said the Ccmmission had failed to deliver justice despite concluding hearings into the matter months ago.

“I blame the Electoral Commission for delaying justice. I have therefore decided to seek redress from the courts of law following the illegal nomination of my competitors for the Makindye mayoral race,” Omari said.

Omari, together with his co-complainant Peter Ndyomugyenyi, through their lawyers M/S Melchi Advocates, petitioned the EC on September 30, 2025 challenging the nomination of 11 candidates in the Makindye mayoral contest.

The candidates are: David Sabuka Tigatoola, Joe Juuko Nakibinge, Ismael Tamale Tabalamule, Malcom James Sewanyana, Phillip Nyika, Sumayiya Nabadda, Juma Kayima, Geoffrey Edu Semata, Haruna Ssebaggala, Bosco Lusagala and Charles Luba Lwanga.

He alleges that the commission unlawfully nominated the candidates using signatures of his supporters to qualify them for nomination, an act he says contravenes Section 123 subsections 9 and 10 of the Local Government Act.

According to Omari, the EC heard the matter but has since failed to deliver a decision. He argues that the Commission should either declare him unopposed or allow him to seek legal redress.

Omari disclosed that his legal team has completed all preparations to file the case in the High Court by Monday or Tuesday next week.

The development comes shortly after the EC disqualified National Unity Platform’s Geoffrey Kayanja from contesting for Nakaseke North parliamentary seat over similar nomination irregularities.

Efforts to obtain a comment from the EC were unsuccessful by press time.
