Since its global inception in France in 1982, World Music Day—locally known as Fête de la Musique—has grown into a global phenomenon. Uganda joined the celebration in 2014, and every year on June 21st, music lovers come together to honour the universal language of rhythm and melody.
This year’s edition, held at the lush Sheraton Gardens in Kampala, was nothing short of magical. As a first-time attendee, I was drawn into a vibrant atmosphere that effortlessly blended music, poetry, and cultural exhibitions. The event was a melting pot of Ugandan and international guests, united by a shared love for the arts.
The evening’s performances were electric. The audience was treated to an eclectic lineup that featured local favourites like Ykee Benda, Zex Bilangi Langi, Ebrahim Soul’o, Blac Queen, Andereya Baguma, Professor Joewi, and the experimental Black Wave Sounds, among others.
Ykee Benda headlined the night with a nostalgic yet refreshing set, proving once again that his classics still hold power. Seamlessly switching between his earlier hits and newer releases, he had the crowd on their feet from start to finish.
Organised by Talent Africa Group, the event was a beautiful reminder of how music can connect people, transcend borders, and celebrate diversity—all in one unforgettable night.
