A 27-year-old woman has been remanded to Mbarara Main Prison by the Grade One Magistrate’s Court after she allegedly locked a tenant and his child inside their rental apartment.
The incident reportedly occurred on April 27, 2025, at GBK House Apartments in Mbarara City. The court was told that Peace Kamarembo confined 43-year-old Shaay Shohole and his three-year-old son, who suffers from floppy cerebral palsy and epilepsy, by padlocking their unit from the outside.

Mr. Shohole testified that Kamarembo had not issued any formal rent demand before taking action and had locked the house only seven days into the new month. He claimed the landlady simply told him she needed the house for “other purposes.”
Appearing before Magistrate Sheebah Nasasira on Monday, June 23, 2025, Kamarembo admitted to locking the door but insisted it was a mistake. “It’s true I locked them inside, but I didn’t know he was there,” she said in her defense.
Prosecutor Davis Aruho requested that the case proceed, noting the accused was present in court. “The suspect is in court, and I ask that the matter moves forward,” he told the magistrate.
Mr. Shohole described the traumatic experience, explaining that he missed a scheduled medical appointment due to being locked inside and that his son’s condition worsened due to lack of ventilation. “My son started having complications after suffocating,” he said.
He managed to call a friend for help, who discovered the padlock and contacted police. Officers arrived and rescued both father and son.
When asked whether he objected to the suspect’s release on bail, Mr. Shohole responded strongly. “What she did was cruel. Imagine locking me inside when I was ill. I don’t want her released. Let the trial proceed so justice is served,” he stated.
Magistrate Nasasira ordered that Kamarembo be remanded until June 26, 2025, when the case will return for further hearing and consideration of her bail application.
