Winnie Kiiza urges youth to contest for political positions

Date:

Former Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Winnie Kiiza, has urged young people to contest political positions at all levels in the 2026 elections to ensure their full participation.

Kiiza made the call during the third National Youth Symposium 2025, themed “A Reflection on 20 Years of Multi-Party Politics: The Role of Young People in Building a Democratic, United, and Prosperous Uganda,” organized by the National Youth Council at Makerere University today. She emphasized that the youth should leverage their numerical strength to engage actively in politics.

“The youth have only five members of parliament, yet they make up over 70 percent of the country’s population. The time is now for them to become policymakers and implementers at both parliamentary and local government levels,” Kiiza advised.

Former Kamuli Woman MP, Proscovia Salaamu Musumba, revealed that she is in the final stages of writing a post-mortem report for the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, which she will present to the nation soon. She stressed that the FDC will not be revived.

The chairperson of the Uganda National Youth Council, Jacob Eyeru, announced that the government has increased the council’s budget from Shs 300 million in the current financial year to Shs 4 billion in the 2025/2026 financial year, which he said will significantly ease their work.
