Weeks after Deal, ANT-PFF Alliance Crumbles Over IPOD Money

Date:

The political partnership between the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) is on the verge of falling apart, only weeks after it was celebrated as a key step toward opposition unity ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The fallout comes after insider reports from the Inter-party Organization for Dialogue (IPOD) revealed that every registered political party participating in IPOD meetings will receive a share of financial support.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two opposition groups was signed by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago (PFF interim president), Gen. Mugisha Muntu (ANT president), and Alice Alaso (ANT national coordinator and former Serere Woman MP), among others.

The MoU was promoted as a symbol of strategic collaboration and maturity within the opposition to challenge the ruling party in the upcoming elections.

However, sources within ANT disclosed to the media on Saturday, July 12, 2025, that growing pressure from party supporters is forcing Gen. Muntu and Alaso to reconsider the alliance and withdraw from the MoU.

According to insider communications from ANT’s official WhatsApp group, some members argue that now that ANT is likely to benefit financially from IPOD activities, the alliance with PFF is no longer necessary.

One of the key figures quoted is Edith Grace Ssempala, the head of ANT’s diaspora team.

“They joined PFF because they lacked funds to support 2026 campaign activities. But now that IPOD offers financial support to parties, there is no need to stay in the alliance. Let them cancel the MoU,” Ssempala reportedly said.

Another influential party member, Charles Kalanzi, the mobilizer for greater Mukono, also expressed frustration in the same WhatsApp group.

“Why are we returning to a group we once left under difficult circumstances? The leadership at PFF is still the same Dr. Kizza Besigye, Harold Kaija, Ssemujju Nganda nothing has changed except the name and location. We left for a reason,” he stated.

Kalanzi was referring to the rebranding of the former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) faction led by Besigye, which now operates as PFF under a new headquarters in Katonga, having moved from Najjanankumbi.

The insider further noted that most ANT supporters are now excited about the party rejoining IPOD independently, with hopes of receiving funds to support their own electoral activities.

While the leadership has not officially announced the cancellation of the MoU, the internal rift and widespread dissatisfaction among members suggest the alliance is no longer viable.
