We Planet Africa backs use of LPG for green future

Date:

Patricia Nanteza, Africa Coordinator for We Planet Africa, has urged Ugandans and Africans to adopt liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a cleaner alternative to traditional energy sources like firewood.

Speaking at the launch of the “Stop Cooking” campaign at Hotel Triangle in Kampala, Nanteza highlighted the environmental and health benefits of reducing reliance on firewood, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and respiratory diseases.

The campaign, piloted by residents of Mwerwerwe in Mityana District, aims to advocate for lifting Western restrictions on LPG use. Nanteza described LPG as a practical, scalable, and life-saving solution, despite its classification as a fossil fuel. She criticized current policies as a “moral failure,” arguing they deepen deforestation, health risks, and gender inequality in Africa by limiting access to clean cooking solutions.

Nanteza called on stakeholders from the private sector, religious groups, civil society, government, and businesses to support the campaign. She accused Western nations of “carbon colonialism,” noting that while they expand their liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure, Africa is pressured to wait for less viable alternatives.

“This is one rule for the rich and another for the poor,” she said.

The “Stop Cooking” campaign is a satirical yet urgent plea to lift restrictions on climate financing for clean cooking solutions like LPG, aiming to position Africa as a leader in the fight against environmental degradation.
