The Democratic Party (DP) in Wakiso district is grappling with indecision over candidate selection for the 2026 elections, leading to confusion as the polls approach.
According to Vincent Kayanja DePaul, the DP chairman in Wakiso, the party is struggling to limit candidates to one per constituency to avoid divisive primaries that could fracture the party.
Speaking at a meeting on July 16, 2025, at Dr. Kasozi Gardens in Zana, Kayanja highlighted the challenge of multiple candidates vying for the same positions while some constituencies lack any DP candidates.
Key contested constituencies include:
Wakiso District Woman MP: Maria Nassali Masereka (a lawyer) and Annet Nakyanja Mawejje (an accountant) are competing.
Busiro East: Ddungu Henry Matovu (constituency chairman), Ronald Mugaga (district secretary and Busiro East organizing secretary), and Salongo Muwera David (vice chairman) are all contending for the same seat.
To resolve the stalemate, Kayanja urged candidates to step down voluntarily and contest in vacant areas like Kyadondo East or various councillor positions at district, municipality, subcounty, and town council levels.
The party aims to mediate to ensure unity and avoid splits. A follow-up meeting was scheduled for a week later to review progress.
Additionally, the meeting set nomination fees at Shs 20,000 for subcounty and town council councillors, Shs 30,000 for district and municipal councillors, and Shs 50,000 for town council and city mayors and chairmen.
