The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is searching for Samuel Kito, a 25-year-old resident of Nazekho village, Mukhuyu sub-county, Namisindwa district, for allegedly entering Mt. Elgon National Park illegally.
Kito was on Thursday, 19th June, 2025 attacked and seriously injured by an elephant while harvesting bamboo in the park on.
According to eyewitnesses, Kito’s colleagues managed to scare the elephant away, saving him from further harm.
Martin Wadawa, the LC1 Chairperson of Nazekho, confirmed that Kito is currently in critical condition at Magale Health Center III, unable to walk or talk due to the severity of his injuries.
Rashid Muhangi, UWA’s communication officer, stated that Kito entered the park without permission, which is a punishable offense.
While UWA apologizes for the elephant’s actions, Kito will face charges for trespassing into the National Park. Muhangi emphasized that anyone entering protected areas without authorization will be arrested and held accountable.
Kito’s condition remains critical, and UWA is actively pursuing him for questioning and potential prosecution.
