Ugandan-Born Student Shamim Nansubuga Named Best Nursing Graduate at U.S. College

Date:

A young woman with roots in Uganda and wings that have carried her across continents, Shamim is a living testament that dedication, humility, and perseverance can transform dreams into destiny.

Born in the United Kingdom to Ugandan parents, Olivia and Karim, Shamim’s story is one of resilience, focus, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. Her educational journey has taken her from the classrooms of London to Kampala and now to the United States, each step reflecting her commitment to growth and purpose.

Her academic path began at Strand on the Green School in the UK before her family relocated to Uganda, where she joined Kampala Parents International School for her primary education. She later attended Seeta High School, completing her Ordinary Level studies with distinction. With her eyes set on broader horizons, Shamim returned to the UK for her Advanced Level studies at Gumley House Convent High School, where her academic brilliance continued to shine.

Motivated by a passion for healthcare and a desire to make a difference, Shamim later moved to the United States to pursue a career in nursing. She enrolled at Inver Hills College in Minnesota, where she quickly distinguished herself both academically and socially. In May 2025, she graduated with an Associate of Science in Nursing, earning the coveted title of Best Student of her Class.

At the commencement ceremony, Shamim delivered an inspiring address titled “Across Continents Towards Purpose,” a speech that resonated deeply with fellow graduates, faculty, and parents. Her words reflected a journey built on gratitude, cultural pride, and faith in perseverance.

Throughout her time at Inver Hills, Shamim maintained an exceptional academic record, consistently making the Dean’s List and becoming a proud member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Her leadership qualities shone through her active service as Treasurer and later Secretary of the Black Students Union, where she championed diversity and inclusion. Her efforts earned her the Equity and Inclusion Award, a recognition of her commitment to fostering representation and belonging on campus.

Shamim’s remarkable performance did not go unnoticed; she received a scholarship from the Inver Hills Foundation, and even before completing her degree, she was offered an early placement opportunity at one of Minnesota’s largest hospitals, a rare feat for a student nurse.

Looking ahead, Shamim plans to transfer to Metropolitan State University to pursue a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), with aspirations of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Her ultimate goal is to combine clinical expertise with compassion to serve diverse communities around the world.

Reflecting on her path, Shamim remains grounded by her values.

“Staying humble, honest, and respectful will take you places you only dreamed about,” she says.

From Uganda to the United Kingdom, and now the United States, Shamim’s story transcends borders. It is a story of courage, culture, and conviction, a shining example to young dreamers everywhere that no distance is too great when purpose lights the way.
