Officials from the Uganda Tourism Board and Uganda Airlines are pitching the country’s heritage and wildlife at OTM Mumbai to tap into the world’s fastest-growing travel market.

MUMBAI, India — Uganda has launched an aggressive marketing campaign in India to promote its heritage experiences and attract increased tourism and investment.

The Uganda High Commission in India, in partnership with the Uganda Tourism Board and Uganda Airlines, is participating in the Outbound Tourism Mart in Mumbai from Feb. 5-7. The delegation also plans to attend the South Asia Tourism and Travel Exchange in New Delhi later this month.

Joyce Kikafunda, Uganda’s high commissioner to India, said India represents one of the fastest-growing source markets for international tourism due to rising disposable incomes and a growing middle class. Kikafunda noted that the Mumbai event offers a significant opportunity to increase the visibility of Uganda as a preferred destination. The mart is expected to attract more than 50,000 trade visitors and 2,200 exhibitors from 60 countries.

The participation in Mumbai follows a series of tourism road shows held in Delhi, Ahmadabad and Mumbai earlier this week. Brian Mwanika, head of economic and commercial diplomacy at the High Commission, said these events were designed to create awareness of the Explore Uganda brand in key cities.

India currently ranks as the leading source of tourists for Uganda outside of East Africa. According to Kikafunda, the number of Indian travelers to Uganda rose from 34,208 in 2024 to 42,800 in 2025. The High Commission aims to increase that figure to more than 100,000 over the next two years.

Uganda is strengthening its presence in the Indian travel market through strategic partnerships and heritage showcases at major trade events in Mumbai and New Delhi.

Travel between the two nations has been bolstered by Uganda Airlines, which began direct flights between Entebbe and Mumbai in October 2023. In September 2025, the carrier signed an agreement with Air India to provide seamless travel options, reducing both costs and travel time for passengers.
