Two arrested as community foils robbery at Fortebet

Date:

A dramatic robbery attempt at Fortebet in Kitemu was disrupted on Thursday morning, May 1, 2025, after a courageous customer and quick-thinking locals intervened, leading to the arrest of two suspects.

Police say the incident unfolded around 9:00 AM when seven armed individuals stormed the betting centre, threatening staff and a security guard with pangas and tying them up.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango confirmed the sequence of events.

“One of the customers, identified as Nkesigga George, arrived during the robbery and was also restrained,” SSP Onyango said.

“However, he managed to free himself and hit one of the suspects with a chair, which sparked a scuffle,” Onyango added.

The sudden confrontation turned the tide. The scuffle enabled other customers and workers to fight back.

In the chaos, two suspects were subdued and turned over to police, though not before being roughed up by members of the community who responded to the commotion.

“The suspects sustained injuries and were taken to BSK Medical Centre for treatment. Police have since documented the crime scene, collected relevant evidence, and recorded statements from witnesses,” Onyango added.
