A scandal involving infidelity and cultural betrayal rocked the Ikaruwok Isama clan in Osukuru Town Council, Tororo District, on July 5, 2025, when a man was accused of engaging in an illicit relationship with a close relative by marriage—an act considered taboo under Iteso tradition.

The controversy centers on Paul Etiang, who reportedly invited Lucy Apaderet—his brother’s daughter-in-law and mother of four, including a one-month-old—into his home shortly after attending a family fundraising event. There, he allegedly engaged in conduct deemed culturally immoral and forbidden.
Eyewitnesses testified before the clan leadership, headed by chairperson Raymond Enaat, who condemned the incident as a serious violation of clan norms and Iteso cultural values. To address the matter, Enaat convened clan elders, neighbors, and representatives of the Iteso Cultural Union for a disciplinary hearing.
Following deliberations, the clan fined Etiang a bull, a ram, 10 jerrycans of malwa (local brew), three roosters, and 50 lashes. Both Etiang and Apaderet publicly apologized to the clan. Etiang attributed his actions to being misled by temptation, while Apaderet expressed remorse and pledged not to repeat her mistake.
However, her husband, John Patrick Tanga—Etiang’s nephew—refused to reconcile, declaring he could no longer accept her as his wife and formally handed her over to Etiang.
