Tororo Man Arrested for Scamming Youth in Fake UPDF Recruitment Scheme

Date:

A man known as Centurion Owor was on Saturday, 10th May, 2025 arrested for scamming many young people in Tororo District in a fake Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) recruitment scheme.

He promised to help them join the army, but instead, he took their money and disappeared.

Owor pretended to be a military agent between 2021 and 2022.He targeted young people who wanted to join the army, claiming he could help them get a spot in the UPDF.

He told them they needed to pay money for processing documents and securing a place in the army. Many hopeful young people paid him large amounts of money, thinking it was for the recruitment process.

However, after receiving the money, Owor vanished and stopped answering calls.

His disappearance caused a lot of confusion and anger among the victims and their families. Some of the victims filed complaints with the police, and soon after, the authorities began searching for Owor.

A manhunt was launched, and police worked hard to find him. Finally, earlier this week, Owor was arrested and taken to Mwello Police Station in Tororo District.

He is now facing serious charges, including obtaining money by false pretenses and impersonating a military officer.

This means that Owor is accused of lying to people to get their money by pretending to be someone he was not. The police have urged anyone who was tricked by Owor to come forward.

They want all the victims to share their stories so that the case can be fully investigated.

Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi South region police spokesperson, says Police investigation is still ongoing, and Owor will soon be taken to court to answer the charges against him.

He says police have promised to do everything they can to make sure that justice is served. This case has raised concerns about scams like this one, where people trick others by promising them jobs or opportunities that do not exist.

The authorities remind the public to be careful and report any suspicious activities to the police.
