The Ugandan entertainment and comedy industry is in mourning following the death of Nicholas Mpiirwe Kamagala, popularly known as DJ Messe Bontwe.

The comedian, media personality and musician passed away in the United States, where he had been residing in search of greener pastures.

Messe was a co-founder of the legendary Amarula Family comedy group, which he established in 1999 alongside Amooti Omubalanguzi and the late Paddy Bitama, but later collapsed.

Before venturing into comedy, Messe was a talented singer in the ‘Hommies Band’ (Abaana be Kka). He gained fame in 1995 with the hit song Bamusakata, a collaboration with the renowned Ragga Dee.
