Three high-ranking Gomba District officials have been remanded to Kanoni Prison over allegations of soliciting bribes from job applicants in exchange for positions in public service.
The accused—Mr. John Bosco Mugerwa (chairperson of the District Service Commission), Mr. Michael Muwonge (DSC secretary), and Mr. Charles Lwanga (district inspector of schools)—were arraigned before Gomba Grade One Magistrate Pauline Sabaakaki on July 11, facing seven counts of demanding money with threats under the Penal Code Act. They denied all charges.

Prosecutors allege the trio, between February and November 2024, extorted between Shs1 million and Shs20 million from applicants vying for district roles. In one instance, Muwonge and Mugerwa reportedly sought Shs20 million from a candidate applying for District Commercial Officer, while in another case, Lwanga allegedly demanded Shs2 million from a teacher during a transfer process.
The accused were apprehended by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, which told the court investigations are ongoing. They will reappear in court on July 25.
This incident mirrors similar corruption cases in other districts. Just days earlier, DSC officials in Mpigi were remanded over related bribery allegations. In Mukono District, DSC Chairperson Eng. Dr. Godfrey Kibuuka Kisuule and District Speaker Betty Hope Nakasi were also arrested in connection with job-for-sale schemes.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit confirmed the arrests and stated that the suspects are part of a broader network of officials implicated in job racketeering across multiple districts. Investigations and further arrests are continuing as authorities seek to dismantle what they describe as a widespread public sector corruption scandal.
