Kampala Woman Member of Parliament (MP) Shamim Malende, a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has made shocking allegations that her own party leaders are plotting to poison her in an attempt to eliminate her from the Kampala Woman MP race.
Speaking to a member of her campaign team, who later disclosed the details to this website, Malende claimed that she was forced into a reconciliation meeting with her political rival, Zahara Luyikira, on Saturday, 16th August 2025. However, she grew suspicious after noticing unusual behavior during the gathering.
Malende revealed that she was offered unsealed bottled water and was repeatedly pressured to drink it, raising fears of a possible poisoning attempt.
“They kept insisting that I take the water, but something didn’t feel right,” she said.
The bitter rivalry between Malende and Luyikira, both competing for the NUP flag in the Kampala Woman MP race, has escalated in recent weeks, marked by smear campaigns on social media and physical altercations between their supporters.
On Saturday, NUP Deputy President for Buganda, Mwanga Kivumbi, summoned the two for a reconciliation meeting. However, Malende alleges that the meeting was a set-up aimed at permanently removing her from the race.
Malende has also accused Luyikira of employing desperate measures to eliminate her from the race, alleging that her rival had resorted to seducing the party president, Robert Kyagulanyi, and bribing members of the election management committee.
She further claimed that Luyikira’s tactics had now escalated to attempted poisoning, demonstrating what she described as extreme desperation to secure the NUP flag for the Kampala Woman MP seat.
This is not the first time NUP leaders have faced accusations of poisoning their own members. In 2023, the late former Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya, publicly claimed that there were plots to kill him and take his parliamentary seat. Months later, he died under mysterious circumstances, with many suspecting poisoning.
