In a political party where almost every close associate of Bobi Wine has found a way to rise and shine, one name stands out, Fred Nyanzi Sentamu, commonly known as Chairman Nyanzi. Unfortunately for him, he stands out not for success, but for a long, embarrassing trail of losses, scandals, and political failure.
Despite being Bobi Wine’s elder brother, Nyanzi has turned into a political nomad, moving from one constituency to another like a rejected hawker trying to sell expired goods. While other NUP candidates comfortably rode the 2021 “People Power” wave to victory, Nyanzi was humiliated in Kampala Central, losing badly to Mohammed Nsereko even when Central Region was a guaranteed win for NUP candidates.
Since then, Nyanzi has turned Uganda’s capital into his personal playground. First, he made noise about contesting for Kampala Lord Mayor, then shifted to Kawempe North, and now, rumor has it he’s setting his greedy eyes on Kawempe South. To many frustrated NUP supporters, this is no longer ambition, it is desperate, shameless political scavenging.
In a party known for “change”, Nyanzi has instead represented the worst kind of old politics; full of selfishness, entitlement, and underhanded deals. While NUP secretly ring-fences “safe seats” for Bobi Wine’s inner circle, it appears Nyanzi is too toxic even for that level of nepotism.
But his failure at the ballot box isn’t even the worst of it. Inside NUP itself, Nyanzi’s name is known for scandals. Multiple whistleblowers within the party have accused him of selling party cards to the highest bidder, sexually harassing female members in exchange for favors and running NUP like a backyard shop for personal gain amongst others.
While these dirty deals may have made him money, they’ve also earned him deep resentment and rejection both from the public and within NUP. His repeated political failures are now seen not as bad luck, but as karma catching up.
In Kawempe South, his latest target, Nyanzi is already facing strong resistance from Loy Sseboga, a loyal NUP member who openly accuses him of being a spoiler and an opportunist abusing family ties. In every area he goes, Nyanzi leaves behind division, betrayal, and disorganization.
Even when NUP tried to gift him a soft landing earlier this year, appointing him as Secretary for International Affairs during the June Delegates Conference, the plan backfired miserably. The NUP diaspora community outright rejected him, calling him incompetent, unqualified, and a total embarrassment to the party’s image abroad.
Chairman Nyanzi is politically cursed, publicly rejected, and morally questionable shadow of People Power.
