Tenants Flee Village over Stinking Garbage from Nkumba Dumping Site

Date:

Landlords in Nkumba /Bukolwa village in Katabi Town Council are agonized after their tenants vacated their rentals over unbearable stinking garbage from Nkumba Dumpsite.

The landlords said on December 18, 2024 that they have on several occasions voiced their concerns to Municipal council environment authorities but unfortunately little action has been taken to address the matter and their tenants could not withstand the bad smell from Nkumba dumpsite anymore.

Locals add that the Nkumba dumpsite got full some months ago, and that Entebbe Municipal council wrote to Kampala Capital City Authority to stop dumping garbage at the said dumpsite but surprisingly KCCA trucks still dump garbage there. They added that when the dumpsite got full to capacity, the trucks resorted to dumping garbage in Lake Victoria and nearby swamps.

The Entebbe Municipality Mayor, Fabrice Rulinda says due to public outcry, council has petitioned the National Environmental Management Authority to work on the issue of garbage at Nkumba dumpsite or else they close the dumpsite.

However, based on the Environment Compliance Inspections of the facility, it was discovered that there has been no environmental compliance on the use of the disputed Nkumba dumpsite and it’s against this backdrop that management of National Environmental Authority (NEMA) decided to prepare official guidelines to Entebbe Municipal Council so as to ensure that there is no land, water and air pollution in addition to putting into consideration the nearby fragile ecosystem.
