Tragedy has struck Ntare School and the Mbarara community following the death of Elvis Magambo, a 19-year-old Senior Five student whose body was discovered floating in River Rwizi on the evening of July 10, 2025.
Magambo, who was pursuing a biology, chemistry, and mathematics (BCM) combination, had recently been suspended from school after breaching school rules. According to Mr. Wilson Ndezi, the deputy head teacher, the student was caught trying to sneak back into school after jumping over the perimeter wall on June 28. As a result, he was suspended and released to his parents pending a decision from the school board.

During a requiem service held at Makenke Church of Uganda, the deceased’s father, Dr. Emmanuel Magambo, expressed sorrow and suspicion, noting that his son bore stab wounds, suggesting possible foul play. The mother, Ms. Christine Magambo, recounted her final moments with Elvis, saying he left home unexpectedly after promising to reform.
Rwizi Region Police spokesperson Mr. Samson Kasasira confirmed that a decomposing male body had been retrieved from the river and was under postmortem examination at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. While police suspect drowning, the identity and cause of death have not been officially confirmed.
The incident has sparked renewed concern over the rising number of student deaths in Uganda, including suspected suicides and unresolved disappearances. In a recent case from April 2025, a Kabale student was found dead in her dormitory under mysterious circumstances, deepening the nationwide worry about student welfare and mental health.
