Stanbic Bank, in partnership with the National Planning Authority (NPA) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), donated 200 mama kits to support maternal health in Uganda ahead of World Population Day which will fall on July 11.
The donation was announced during a news conference at the Uganda Media Centre, where UNFPA presented its 2025 State of World Population Report.
John Tumwine, Head of Public Sector Client Coverage at Stanbic Bank, emphasized the significance of the gesture, stating, “Each kit represents a mother who deserves safety, a newborn who deserves a healthy start, and a community that thrives when care is provided at the critical moment of birth.”
Tumwine highlighted Stanbic Bank’s commitment to Uganda’s development, stating, “Investing in maternal health is not charity; it’s foresight and legacy-building, aligning with our purpose: ‘Uganda is our home, and we drive her growth.’”
He praised NPA and UNFPA for their roles in shaping inclusive policies and impactful outcomes.
The UNFPA report, launched globally on June 10, 2025, highlights a global fertility crisis driven by economic and social barriers preventing millions from achieving their desired family size.
According to a UNFPA/YouGov survey across 14 countries, one in five people expect not to have their desired number of children due to these barriers, while one in three adults reported experiencing an unintended pregnancy.
Dr. Gift Malunga, UNFPA Representative in Uganda, underscored the lack of reproductive choice as the core issue. “The real fertility crisis is not about overpopulation or underpopulation, but about people’s inability to make free choices about their families,” he said.
Malunga urged governments to invest in health, education, paid family leave, and access to reproductive health services to support voluntary reproductive choices.
The donation aims to ensure safer deliveries and healthier starts for newborns, reinforcing the call for a Uganda where “every mother delivers with dignity and every child begins life with hope.”
