SSP Nixon Agasirwe’s Detention Extended: To Stay In Luzira Prison Until July 8th

Date:

Nakawa Magistrates Court has further remanded Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nixon Agasirwe to Luzira Upper Prison until July 8, 2025, as investigations into the 2015 murder of senior state prosecutor Joan Kagezi continue.

During the court session, today, June 16, 2025, the prosecution read the charge sheet, indicating that Agasirwe is accused of murder, contrary to Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 128.

“The particulars are that SSP Agasirwe Nixon Karuhanga and others still at large, on the 13th day of March, 2015, at Kiwatule, Nakawa Division in Kampala District, unlawfully caused the death of Joan Namazzi Kagezi,” the prosecution stated.

However, Agasirwe was not allowed to take a plea, as the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court lacks jurisdiction over capital offenses such as murder.

“You don’t have to plea. We do not have the jurisdiction,” the presiding magistrate said.

The State Attorney in response mentioned that investigations were still ongoing and requested for a further adjournment.

Agasirwe consented to the delay, telling court that his legal counsel needed additional time to prepare.

The former police commander, once in charge of the Special Operations and Investigations Unit, was arrested in Kampala following new developments in the long-standing murder case.

His arrest came just days after Daniel Kisseka Kiwanuka, a self-confessed participant in the Kagezi assassination, testified in court, claiming he acted under orders from a man named “Nixon,” who arrived at the scene in a white government-marked vehicle.

Investigators believe the individual referred to is Nixon Agasirwe, who held a powerful position within the police force at the time of Kagezi’s killing.

Joan Kagezi was gunned down in March 2015 while driving home with her children. At the time, she was a lead prosecutor in high-profile terrorism and war crimes cases.

Agasirwe will remain in custody at Luzira until the matter returns to court on July 8, 2025.
