The Ugandan government has today, 26th January 2026, lifted the temporary restrictions imposed on social media platforms nationwide.
The restriction followed a nationwide internet shutdown, where internet services were restricted to avoid misinformation, election fraud, and inciting violence.
Following the general internet restoration on Saturday, 17, 2026, authorities maintained restrictions on social media platforms.
During this period, Ugandans were unable to access several social media applications, prompting some to use available solutions, such as virtual private networks (VPNs).
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) ED, Nyombi Thembo, however, warned Ugandans using VPNs to break the law, saying they risked being directly attacked and their devices permanently blocked from the internet.

Upon reviewing the current situation in the country, the restrictions have been lifted, and Ugandans can now use the platforms without VPNs.
Reacting to the situation, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba thanked Ugandans for the support and cooperation throughout the electoral season.
