The Special Forces Command (SFC) opened the 3rd edition of its Inter-Unit Rifle Competition on Monday, with Col. Wilson Bagonza hailing President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his unwavering support in building a well-trained and equipped military force.
Presiding over the event on behalf of the SFC Commander, Maj. Gen. David Mugisha, Col. Bagonza praised the Commander-in-Chief for laying the foundation for a strong and professional army.
“I thank our Commander-in-Chief, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Everything we are doing stems from his vision. He actively supports our training and ensures that we remain well-equipped,” said Col. Bagonza at the Fort Samora Machel Special Forces Training School in Kaweweta, Nakaseke District.
He also commended Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his role in professionalizing not only the SFC but the entire Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
Strengthening Combat Readiness and Unity
Col. Bagonza urged competitors to take the opportunity seriously and use it to refine their operational skills and teamwork. “You might not be the best, but you were chosen to be here. Compete with confidence and uphold the brotherhood,” he said.
The competition, which features 11 teams from across the SFC’s four formations—Headquarters Group, One Special Forces Group, Two Special Forces Group, and Three Special Forces Group—focuses on practical combat disciplines including:
- Strongest Special Challenge
- Long-Range Rifle Challenge
- Pistol Challenge
- Hostage Rescue
- Direct Action and Target Engagement
On the final day, best-performing squads will demonstrate advanced operational drills including shooting falling plates, hostage rescue simulations, and direct assault scenarios.
Celebrating Excellence and Discipline
Lt. Col. Beyendera Edison, Commandant of the training school, described the event as more than a test of strength and marksmanship.
“This competition is a celebration of our values—discipline, precision, and unwavering commitment. It strengthens unity, encourages healthy competition, and enhances our readiness,” said Lt. Col. Beyendera.
Col. Paul Lokut, Director of Training and Doctrine for SFC, emphasized that the tasks being performed mirror real-world Special Forces missions globally. “From direct action to hostage rescue and unconventional warfare, these scenarios are central to what we do as Special Forces. Embrace the challenge and make your commanders proud,” he added.
A Model for Professionalism in the Forces
The event attracted high-ranking officers, including commanding officers, training instructors, and SFC operations teams. It reinforced the UPDF’s broader mission to professionalize and modernize its elite forces.
Col. Bagonza encouraged participants to compete with integrity. “This is not a fight against enemies. Help your comrades, sharpen your skills, and let our unity as Special Forces stand out.”
The SFC inter-unit rifle competition continues to serve as a cornerstone for refining skills, boosting morale, and honoring the values of Uganda’s elite force.
