Seven Line Up to Unseat Minister Kasaija in Buyanja Constituency Battle

Date:

A competitive political contest is shaping up in Buyanja County, Kibaale District, as multiple candidates prepare to challenge long-serving Finance Minister Matia Kasaija for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag ahead of the 2026 general elections.

At 80 years old, Kasaija has represented Buyanja since 2001, serving four consecutive terms. However, dissatisfaction over stalled development and limited engagement with constituents has fueled calls for new leadership. Critics argue that despite his senior cabinet role, the constituency continues to struggle with poor infrastructure, lack of basic services, and weak representation at the grassroots level.

Buyanja County, one of the largest in Kibaale District with eight sub-counties and two town councils, has so far seen seven individuals collect nomination forms to run against Kasaija. The aspirants include professionals, local leaders, and community activists who claim the minister has become too disconnected from the people.

Among the challengers are Dr. Charles Ntege, who decries the lack of a district hospital and broken promises such as a modern market; Catherine Katusiime, who says women and the poor remain unrepresented; and Councillor Godfrey Mwebaze, who argues that Kasaija’s national responsibilities leave little room for constituency work.

Some residents echo the aspirants’ frustrations, citing dilapidated infrastructure and minimal visibility of their MP. Yet Kasaija’s supporters insist his contributions are tangible, noting achievements such as a dedicated roads budget, procurement of school resources, and plans for an industrial park and upgraded health facilities.

With increasing calls for generational change, grassroots representation, and development delivery, Buyanja County is poised for a heated race. Whether Kasaija’s experience and record will be enough to secure a fifth term in the face of rising local discontent remains uncertain.
