Over the weekend, on 18 January 2026, the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) concluded, with Senegal emerging victorious.
The tournament marked the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, which kicked off on December 21, 2025, with Morocco facing Comoros in the opening match.
24 African national teams, including Uganda’s Uganda Cranes, participated in the AFCON in Morocco, with Senegal and Morocco reaching the final.
The final was marred by chaos and drama, and at one point, Senegal’s players exited the field to protest a penalty decision.
Following a 14-minute scuffle and delay, Édouard Mendy saved Brahim Díaz’s Panenka penalty much to the Atlas Lions’s disappointment.

In the first half of the extra time, Pape Gueye scored the winning goal for Senegal, marking the country’s second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy.
