Sanjay Tanna, the former Tororo Municipality MP and a prominent businessman, has attributed Uganda’s limited investment opportunities to insufficient support for the Entrepreneurs League within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
In an exclusive interview with Bbeg Media in Kampala, Tanna emphasized that Uganda could have seen significant growth in business opportunities if the Entrepreneurs League had received adequate backing.
“On behalf of the NRM Entrepreneurs League, I urge the party chairman and other leaders in the Central Executive Committee to prioritize the league, as it is the engine for creating business opportunities in Uganda,” Tanna stated.
He explained that many investors are keen to invest in Uganda but are deterred by the lack of support from the Entrepreneurs League. This includes challenges such as delays in business registration, difficulties in connecting with relevant government departments, and navigating the regulatory framework governing business operations in the country.
Tanna, who is also a candidate for the vice chairperson position of the Entrepreneurs League in the NRM National Executive Committee, revealed plans to establish a secretariat, similar to those in India and Bangladesh, to attract investors and help businesses capture markets for their goods and services.
Expressing concerns about the government’s Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) initiative, aimed at alleviating poverty, Tanna argued that the government should instead promote an “Operation All Work” (Bonna Bakole) approach.
He believes this would encourage people to engage in productive work and receive support for their business efforts, rather than relying on handouts. He called for urgent reforms to the initiative to make it more effective.
Tanna also stressed the need for zoning in Uganda’s productive regions to leverage comparative advantages and promote specialization-based production.
“They’ve put the cart before the horse by supporting women and youth in various development programs, but entrepreneurs need similar attention,” he said.
However, Tanna commended Gen Salim Saleh for his efforts in driving production across the country despite challenges such as heavy taxation, load shedding, and poor road networks in industrial hubs.
