Rubongoya Accuses Baganda of Tribalism if They Don’t Vote Him in Kampala Central MP Race

Date:

National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya has claimed that the Baganda people will only reject his bid for Kampala Central MP because of his tribal background, insisting that he is the most qualified candidate in the race.

Speaking on a local radio station earlier today, August 12, 2025, Rubongoya, a Munyankole with Rwandan ties, argued that his academic credentials make him the best choice, despite not being a native of Kampala Central or a Muganda.

“I have a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School and a Master’s in International Human Rights Law from the University of Oxford. So, who is more competent than me?” Rubongoya boasted.

While acknowledging that he has lived in Kampala Central for less than five years, he dismissed concerns about his connection to the constituency, stating that his lack of long-term residency should not disqualify him from effectively representing the area.

Rubongoya went further, suggesting that if the Baganda have “failed to represent their own people,” they should allow someone more capable to take up the role. He warned that voters who reject him based on his ethnicity would be acting out of tribalism rather than merit.

His comments come just days after Buganda Kingdom’s Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, urged the Baganda to support leaders who understand their native challenges. Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has also repeatedly cautioned his subjects against being misled by political candidates who do not prioritise Buganda’s interests.
