Date:

Kampala-Uganda is mourning the death of veteran politician, businessman, and philanthropist Dr. James Musinguzi Garuga, who passed away under yet-to-be-confirmed circumstances.

His death marks the end of an era for a man widely regarded as a pillar in both Uganda’s political evolution and private sector development.

The news of Dr. Garuga’s passing was confirmed on Tuesday morning by political activist and People’s Front for Transition (PFT) promoter, Ingrid Turinawe, who eulogized him in a heartfelt social media post during a court session for Dr. Kizza Besigye’s bail hearing.

“Very sad news as we sit in court, waiting for Kizza Besigye’s bail application our mentor, our financier, our founder, our eminent person, Dr. James Musinguzi Garuga has gone to be with the Lord,” Turinawe posted.

Dr. Garuga was the proprietor of Kigezi Highlands Tea Factory, one of the most successful private tea enterprises in southwestern Uganda. He was widely known not only for his business acumen but also for his deep-rooted commitment to community development and political advocacy.

His political journey began as one of the key figures in the 1986 liberation struggle that brought the National Resistance Army/Movement (NRA/M) to power under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. He later took a bold step to join opposition forces, becoming one of the founding members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), a party that has stood as a major political counterweight in Uganda’s multiparty politics.

Despite crossing over to opposition ranks, Dr. Garuga was always respected for his statesmanship and ability to foster dialogue across Uganda’s often-divided political spectrum. At the time of his passing, Dr. Garuga was serving as the Chancellor of Valley University of Science and Technology in Bushenyi District.

The institution, founded by Mzee William Mikaira, has been instrumental in expanding access to higher education in western Uganda. He is remembered not only for his contributions to education and politics but also for his role in empowering farmers and small-scale business owners through mentorship, capital investments, and advocacy for economic independence.

Messages of condolence continue to pour in from across Uganda’s political, academic, and business communities, many describing him as a selfless, visionary leader and mentor.“He was a giant among men. A fearless advocate for justice and progress. Uganda has lost a patriot,” said a local politician in Kabale.

Though details surrounding the cause of his death remain unclear, sources indicate that more information will be made available in due course.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.

Dr. James Musinguzi Garuga leaves behind a towering legacy—one that cuts across the political aisle, empowers the rural poor, and inspires future generations to lead with principle and purpose.

May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace.
