KABERAMAIDO, Uganda — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni reaffirmed his government’s commitment to peace, development and wealth creation Saturday while campaigning in the Teso sub-region.
Addressing thousands of supporters in Kaberamaido District, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer for the 2026 elections said peace is the cornerstone of Uganda’s transformation. He noted that the area, once plagued by rebel activity and cattle rustling, has been stabilized.
“Peace has returned to this area after years of insecurity when rebels used to kidnap our children from schools like Lwala Girls,” Museveni said. “The NRM has been able to bring peace to the whole country, and that’s our first contribution to Uganda.”
He highlighted infrastructure projects, including the upcoming upgrade of the 73.5-kilometer Katine-Kaberamaido Road and a new ferry, the MV BKK, which will connect Teso and Busoga sub-regions across Lake Kyoga.
On social services, Museveni applauded the district’s 91% rural safe water coverage and announced new solar-powered water schemes for Ocero and Apapai Town Councils. He also pledged to resolve intermittent power outages, attributing them to nationwide wiring upgrades.
In education, he said the government aims for a primary school in every parish and a secondary school in every sub-county, vowing his next administration would prioritize eliminating hidden costs in government schools.
“Let’s all agree that we can provide free education in the government schools,” he said, to a resounding cheer from the crowd.
On health, plans are underway to upgrade two health centers and build two new ones to improve access.
The president urged residents not to confuse public infrastructure with personal wealth, encouraging them to engage in commercial agriculture. He showcased successful entrepreneurs and pledged to establish a Fish Fund to support aquaculture.
Under the Parish Development Model, Kaberamaido has received 8.9 billion Ugandan shillings (UGX), benefiting 8,864 households. Museveni also announced a special fund for religious projects.
First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni, who is also the education minister, commended the district for its support and urged voters to “safeguard Uganda’s stability through the ballot.”
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among thanked the president for 500 million UGX for a new hospital theater and noted the district’s inclusion in a $270 million World Bank program for northern Uganda.
In the 2021 election, Museveni received 56.4% of the vote in Kaberamaido. The district now has 64,167 registered voters, up from the previous cycle.
The rally was attended by ministers, members of parliament, and security and cultural leaders.
