President Museveni Pardons NUP’s Political Prisoners

Uganda’s head of state President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has issued an Instrument Pardon in which he has pardoned 19 members of National Unity Platform (NUP) who were recently convicted by Makindye General Court martial on charges of treachery and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The Army court in October this year, sentenced the 16 individuals to three months and 22 days for treachery and issued a caution for unlawful possession of ammunition.

“In exercise of the power vested in me under Article 121(1)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, 1995 as amended and on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, I hereby grant a pardon of the sentence to the persons below of the offence of Treachery c/s 129 (a) of the UPDF Act, Cap 330 and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition c/s 3 (1) (2) (a) of the Fire Arms Act, Cap 320.” reads part of President Museveni’s pardon instrument.

The pardoned individuals are : Olivia Nalutaaya, Sseguja Rashid, Rugumayo Robert Christopher, Kakooza Muhuyadin, Kujambu Simon, Matoovu Abdul, Kijambu Ronald, Kiwanuka Mesach, Wandera Ibrahim, Nagwere Asubat, Musaakuru Stephen, Muwanguzi Paul, Matovu Sharif, Mafabi Davis.

Others are Katushabe Kigozi Livingstone, Katabi Swaibu, Obalayai Mudebo Siraji, Muganza Jospeh, Lwanga Stanley. This instrument means that the convicts who have spent four years in detention will now regain their freedom and walk free.
