In response to growing concerns regarding the detention of opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye, Museveni has insisted on the need for trial to clarify the serious allegations against him.
President Museveni has emphasized the importance of a stable and secure country, urging citizens to focus on the legal process rather than fueling insecurity.
“I have seen the concern by some Ugandans regarding the remanding of Dr. Besigye for the very serious offences he is alleged to have been planning,” President Museveni said.
He urged that the key question should not be about the detention but rather the reason behind Dr. Besigye’s arrest: “Naye Dr. Besigye bamukwatila ki? Why was Dr. Besigye arrested?”
The President reiterated that the objective was to conduct a quick trial, where the facts surrounding the case will be brought to light.
“Otherwise, you are promoting insecurity, which is very dangerous for the country,” he warned.
Museveni further addressed the issue of reconciliation, emphasizing that the principle of forgiveness has been integral to Uganda’s national doctrine since the 1960s.
“Nobody in the world can easily give us lectures on reconciliation and forgiveness because that is part of our doctrine right from the 1960s,” he said, reinforcing the country’s commitment to peace and stability despite the ongoing political tensions.
This statement comes amidst mounting international and domestic calls for Besigye’s release on health grounds, with his supporters and family demanding immediate access to medical care. The case has raised concerns about political persecution, especially with Besigye’s long-standing opposition to Museveni’s government.
