The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning in Spain’s Zamora province. According to the Guardia Civil, the Lamborghini the brothers were traveling in veered off the road and caught fire after a tyre burst while overtaking another vehicle.
Jota, who recently celebrated his wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso and was a father of three, had just played a pivotal role in helping Liverpool clinch the Premier League title and contributed to Portugal’s recent UEFA Nations League triumph over Spain.
In a statement, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) expressed profound sorrow, describing both men as not only talented athletes but also admirable individuals whose loss leaves a significant void in the sport and national community. UEFA has been asked to hold a minute of silence before Portugal’s Women’s Euros fixture against Spain.
Jota previously played for FC Porto during the 2016–17 season, a time when his brother was also part of the club’s youth system. Condolences have poured in from clubs, fans, and the global football community, all mourning the devastating loss of two promising lives.
