Police Officers Probed Over Viral TikTok Video Featuring Pro-Bobi Wine Song

Date:

Two police officers from the Uganda Police Band are under disciplinary investigation after a TikTok video showing them dancing and singing to a song praising opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, went viral.

In the video, which appeared online on Thursday evening, Constables Joseph Owor (also known as Afande Miah) and Safi Muwanika are seen in full police uniform performing alongside local musician Omukunja Atasera. The artist is dressed in red, the signature color of Kyagulanyi’s National Unity Platform (NUP).

The clip sparked widespread debate on social media, with many questioning whether the officers had breached police rules by engaging in political expression—something strictly prohibited by police conduct policies.

The video attracted even more attention after Kyagulanyi shared it on his official platforms.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed that internal investigations have been launched. “If the officers are found in violation, they will be dealt with under the police’s disciplinary code,” Rusoke said.

Further complicating the case, Eric, the videographer behind the original recording, told Nile Post that the version shared online had been altered. He claimed that Atasera requested the original footage but later added politically charged audio without his consent.

“The video was intended purely for entertainment,” Eric explained. “I was shocked to see it edited and shared with different audio.”

Police have since tasked their forensics department with examining the authenticity of the video. The officers’ phones have also been seized for investigation.

Authorities are reviewing content on Muwanika’s TikTok account, which includes several music-related posts, some featuring Atasera. It is still unclear whether the officers were aware of the political messaging in the final video.

Photos circulating online also show the officers in a recording studio with Atasera, raising further questions about their possible collaboration.

The situation escalated when the video appeared on Afande Miah’s TikTok account with the caption: “New Song Protest Vote out by me Afande Miah and Omukunja Atasera.” However, some sources claim Atasera may have accessed the officer’s account, potentially framing him.

The Uganda Police Force has reiterated its commitment to enforcing political neutrality among officers. Rusoke emphasized, “Any officer found to be participating in political activities—directly or indirectly—will face disciplinary action.”

Investigations are still underway.
