Police In Kasese Overwhelmed By Gender Based Violence Cases

Date:

Police in Kasese District have expressed growing concern over the escalating number of gender-based violence (GBV) cases, which they say are threatening family stability and child welfare across the region.

Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, revealed that all four divisions—Katwe, Bwera, Hima, and Kasese—are grappling with similar challenges. Addressing journalists at Kasese Central Police Station, Tumushime said police have registered at least 116 GBV-related cases since the start of the year, with many more likely going unreported. Common offenses include child neglect, domestic abandonment, kidnapping, and even murder or attempted murder between spouses.

In a shocking update, SP Tumushime also confirmed that two teenage boys from Munkunyu Sub-county are currently in custody at Bwera Divisional Police Headquarters on allegations of raping elderly women.

The suspects allegedly used alcohol to manipulate and lure the victims into non-consensual acts. Authorities are calling for increased community vigilance and stronger intervention mechanisms to curb the disturbing trend.
