Tragedy struck on April 6, 2025, when a police officer was brutally killed by a mob during a burial ceremony in Ibanda District.
The slain officer, No. 75290 PC Chemonges Suleiman, a 28 year old man, was attached to Bisheshe Police Station and had been deployed to provide security at the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus in Kambogo Cell, Bisheshe Division.
Kahangire Lazarus, who was on remand for attempted murder, had died at Nyabuhikye Government Prison.
The mob, blaming police for his arrest and detention, turned on PC Chemonges at around 2:00 PM, accusing him of playing a role in Kahangire’s incarceration.
Despite firing warning shots to protect himself, Chemonges was overwhelmed and killed on the spot.
Officers later recovered an SMG rifle with 16 rounds of ammunition from the scene. His body was transported to Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary for a postmortem.
Police have so far arrested 29 suspects linked to the murder and continue to hunt for more culprits.
The Uganda Police Force has condemned the attack and vowed to bring all perpetrators to justice.
“This violent act is unacceptable. All those involved will be held accountable,” the statement reads.
