Police arrest 3, uncover motorcycle theft ring in Nsangi

Date:

Police in Nsangi have arrested three men and recovered two motorcycles following a raid on a local garage suspected of being part of an organized theft network, authorities said Wednesday.

The operation took place Tuesday afternoon in the Kigwanya Cell area of Wakiso District. According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the crackdown followed intelligence reports concerning a motorcycle stolen from Arua District last week.

Investigators identified the primary suspect as 22-year-old Kefa Kabogoza, also known as Kivumbi. Police allege Kabogoza robbed a victim in Arua of a red Bajaj Boxer on Feb. 27 before transporting the vehicle to Nsangi.

The motorcycle was later tracked to Younger’s Garage in Buwali Village. Police said the suspect intended to alter the engine and registration details to hide the vehicle’s identity.

During the raid, officers recovered the red Bajaj Boxer and a blue Spiro motorcycle, along with a spare license plate, an exhaust pipe and a seat cushion.

In addition to Kabogoza, police arrested Shafik Bbagala, the garage proprietor, and Samson Aryatuha, a parking attendant.

Owoyesigyire said the discovery of additional parts suggests the group is part of a larger racket dedicated to dismantling and rebranding stolen motorcycles for resale.

The suspects remain in custody while investigators work to trace the owners of the recovered property.
